Of everything on our health pages, this is the risk that affects the most households — and the one almost nobody connects to rodents, because the symptoms look like ordinary allergies.
The mechanism
Rodent urine contains major urinary proteins (MUPs). Mice in particular produce them in large quantities and scent-mark constantly as they move, depositing small amounts of urine along travel routes rather than in one place.
As that urine and the accompanying droppings dry, the proteins become airborne on fine particles. They then circulate — and in a Tucson home with attic ductwork, the air handling system distributes them efficiently through the living space.
These proteins are recognised allergens and asthma triggers. Occupational medicine has documented this for decades in laboratory animal workers, and the same allergens appear in residential settings with rodent activity.
The pattern that gives it away
This is the single most useful thing on this page.
Outdoor allergens follow a calendar. Tucson has well-known seasonal patterns — spring tree pollen, mesquite and palo verde, olive and mulberry in some neighbourhoods, grasses, and a distinct bump after monsoon rains. If your symptoms track those seasons, that is what they are.
Rodent allergen does the opposite: symptoms get worse when you are at home, and better when you are away.
Signals worth noticing:
- Symptoms improve noticeably on holiday and return within a day or two of getting home
- Symptoms are worse in one particular room, or worse at night in a bedroom
- Symptoms are worse when the air conditioning is running
- A child's asthma control deteriorates without a change in medication or season
- Symptoms appeared or worsened around the same time you first heard attic noise
That last one is the connection people miss. If the timing lines up, treat it as a lead.
Why Tucson homes distribute it so well
Attic ductwork is standard here, and attics are where roof rats establish. When rodents contaminate insulation around and on top of duct runs — and particularly when they chew the duct wrap or breach the flex duct itself — the air handler draws across and through contaminated material.

Who is most affected
Children are disproportionately affected — their airways are smaller and they spend more time at floor level, closer to settled dust. Anyone with existing asthma, anyone immunocompromised, and older adults are also higher risk.
For these households we would steer you away from doing cleanup yourself, particularly at attic scale, because the cleanup process is precisely when airborne exposure peaks.
Reducing the allergen load
Remove the source
Nothing else on this list matters as much. Exclusion to stop entry, removal to clear the population, and then removal of contaminated material. Cleaning around an active population is a treadmill.
Decontaminate rather than just clean
Contaminated insulation cannot be salvaged — the proteins are in the material. It has to come out. See attic cleanup and decontamination.
Never sweep or vacuum droppings
A standard household vacuum without HEPA filtration passes fine particles straight through the exhaust and disperses them more effectively than leaving them alone. Mist with disinfectant, wait five minutes, wipe with paper towel, double-bag.
Seal and inspect the ductwork
Repair chewed wrap and breached ducts. If contamination has entered the system, duct cleaning is worth considering once the rodent problem is resolved — but not before, or you will be doing it twice.
Improve filtration
A higher-MERV filter in the air handler, changed on schedule, reduces circulating particulate. A HEPA air cleaner in a bedroom helps as a supporting measure. Neither is a substitute for removing the source.
Wet-clean hard surfaces
Damp cloths and mopping rather than dry dusting, which redistributes settled particles.
Talk to a doctor as well

What is worth doing: if the home-versus-away pattern fits, tell your doctor or allergist specifically that there has been rodent activity in the property. Rodent allergen is a recognised category and testing exists for it, but it will not be considered if nobody mentions it. That single sentence in the consulting room is the useful action.
The order of operations
Source removal, then decontamination, then filtration and medical management. Air purifiers and antihistamines while an active population continues to deposit fresh material in the attic will underperform, and the household concludes nothing works.
How long does it take to improve?
A fair question, and the honest answer has two parts.
Airborne allergen levels fall relatively quickly once the source is removed and contaminated material is out — days to a couple of weeks, depending on ventilation and how much settled dust remains on soft furnishings. Wet-cleaning hard surfaces and laundering fabrics accelerates it.
Symptom improvement lags behind that. Airway inflammation does not resolve the moment exposure stops, and someone whose asthma has been poorly controlled for months will not feel better overnight. Give it several weeks before judging whether the intervention worked, and keep your doctor involved through that period rather than adjusting medication on your own.
What about duct cleaning?
Frequently asked, and the answer is conditional.
If rodents were in the attic but the duct system was intact, duct cleaning adds little — the contamination is in the insulation surrounding the ducts, not inside them. Removing the insulation is what matters.
If the ducts were breached — chewed flex duct, torn wrap with material drawn inside, or droppings visible within the system — then cleaning is worthwhile. But only after the rodent problem is fully resolved and the breaches repaired. Cleaning ducts on an active problem means doing it twice.
Be cautious of anyone recommending duct cleaning as a first step. Sequence is source removal, then decontamination, then ducts.
